You have a Choice

“So I saw a picture of you on Facebook after one of your races. My friends and I thought it is funny that you’re a personal trainer and you’re fat!” -Anonymous

“I don’t have time to eat. I don’t like water. I am not giving up my wine.” –People who want to change

“I am unhappy with my job, because….” –Complainers

I don’t care what people say, you always have a choice. That doesn’t mean the choices are great, but you have a choice. We also all have the power to make the choice on how to react. Let me explain by breaking down these recently heard quotes.

“So I saw a picture of you on Facebook after one of your races. My friends and I thought it is was funny that you’re a personal trainer and you’re fat!” -Anonymous

This one really hit home, especially if you know me personally, know what I have been through, and the amount of work I have put in to be where I am. The funny thing is the person who said this quote was in no position to judge me for numerous reasons, and the biggest being that the individual is completely out of shape. I could react a few ways here. Of course this hurt my feelings A LOT! I could have chosen to speak my mind and create a conflict (I was close), I could have laughed it off, or I could take the feelings I felt from it and use it as fuel. It is now what pushes me with some other negatives I intend to turn into positives to kick ass this year.

“I don’t have time to eat. I don’t like water. I am not giving up my wine.” –People who want to change

As someone that is in the fitness industry I run into this situation a lot. Many people want the change, but are not willing to do the work. I say this to these people. “What have you been doing to reach your goal?” I usually get a typical response, full of justifications and excuses. I then reply, “So how has that worked for you so far?” Bottom line, like in all situations, FITNESS IS A CHOICE! If you want to make a change, be prepared to put in the work. As a personal trainer I never take credit for people making changes in their life when it comes to fitness. My job is simply to show you the door and give you the tools. It is YOU that makes the choice to come to the gym. It is YOU that makes the decision to eat a salad instead of a bag of chips. It is YOU that makes the commitment to change through your sweat, tears, and work ethic.

“I am unhappy with my job, because…” –Complainers

Some people are just negative. I used to be one so I have some understanding. However, we all have a choice to react to certain things in our life. If you are unhappy with your job, advocate for yourself. If you don’t get what you think you deserve, then make the change. If you are unhappy in a relationship, you have the choice to leave. I understand that many times what stops us is fear. Fear of the unknown can be a crippling thing if you choose to view it that way. Perhaps it is best to view the unknown as an opportunity.

We have the choice to view our situations through different lenses. Do we fold under insults or do we make the choice to rise above and prove them wrong? Do we keep justifying why we haven’t changed or do we go all in and work our butt’s off? Do you stay unhappy or do you make the choice to change? Take the time to figure out if what you want is worth the effort. If it is something you want bad enough, you will make the choices to get you there.

Once you make the choice to make the change, the next step is to figure out how to actually do it. Next week I will revisit the topic of goal setting and why it is important to have both short-term and long-term goals.
