As I have mentioned, 2016 is the “Year of the Spartan.” One race in Las Vegas, three races in Colorado Springs, another in Montreal, and the latest in Utah. First off, Utah is amazing, breathe-taking, and just all around beautiful. From the moment we landed it felt like a dream. The airport was welcoming and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. The hospitality and residence where the group stayed was more than immaculate. The race was brutally challenging in a really fun way as always. It was my best race to date and it has only motivated me to do better in the upcoming events. In case you were wondering I placed 50th out of almost 300 for my age group in the competitive flight and earned some more hardware.
The next day the crew, also known as “Gordon’s Gang”, headed to Deer Valley Ski Resort to do some downhill mountain biking. It was the first time for many of us, including myself. Talk about getting out of your comfort zone. Needless to say, the jumps, the people, the views, and the excitement were AWESOME! I may have found a new hobby.
Thinking back and reflecting on all my Spartan experiences thus far, they have a few things in common. The obvious is the race with the challenges, the obstacles, the burpees, and all of that to overcome, but more importantly the people that I have been surrounded by. I have raced with or met some amazing individuals that not only brought me joy, but also have inspired me in their own way.
The key to living a happy, positive, and successful life (if you are unsure of what success is, read the previous blog) is to surround yourself with people that showcase these amazing and important attributes. We have all had moments of doubt, sadness, weakness, and even depression, but we all truly deserve to be the happiest that we can be. When you surround yourself with company that is positive, ambitious, and generally happy, you’ll find yourself exhibiting those characteristics.
I just wanted to take the time to truly thank all the amazing people that have been apart of my “Year of the Spartan” so far. You keep the drive in me going and I can’t thank you enough. Much love to you all.
